Hard Timed Writing

I recently gave my English 12 students a timed writing asking them to explain Dickens' purpose for writing Hard Times and judge how well it fulfills his purpose. I really shouldn't be surprised at how often I have read this response:

Dickens wrote Hard Times to show what a hard time it was.
